mpxguy,

I ordered the V88 for a friends son and the V89 for his daughter and they arrived last week. Absolutely cool little players. The new touch sensitive controls take a bit of getting used to but they don't take long to master. The display is crisp, sound is brilliant and with the rockchip multitasking will play music while you do other things like browse through photos.
The only faults i found are when the battery starts to get low the touch controls don't work so well and it's actually alot smaller than it looks.
But still, I want one now!

I noticed those things too, but I still think it's a pretty cool player too.

I just got mine as well and i noticed the same things. For the first 10 minutes or so i was cursing up a storm trying to get the touch controls figured out. But now that i have used it for a few minutes i have mastered the controls and love it.

The only thing i cant figure out is how do i stop the radio?

It seems that the Omega V88 has been replaced with the Omega V89, where the sole difference between them is that the V89 now comes (thankfully) equipped with a 3.5mm jack instead of the 2.5mm one.

There is also a slightly different version of it called the Temptation. I am more partial to this, but I cannot confirm if the LED backlight for the touch pad is blue.

What do you guys think? I am thinking of purchasing it as a sort of upgrade from the Samsung YP-T8 which I am currently using, but is sort of hesitant because of:

  • Low battery life of only up to 8 hours only for music (my YP-T8 yields 20 hours very easily)
  • Is the Rockchip based user interface as "ugly" as many say they are?
  • The availability of firmwares
  • The size and quality of the voice recording feature (it's in WAV, while my YP-T8 records in really high quality MP3 up to 192kbps)
  • Also for FM radio, does anybody know if it records in WAV or MP3 format?

Thanks in advance!

DarkRay , battery issues are common for such players. The battery playback time is shortened due to the smaller sized players.

I guess the UI varies from person to person, it may not look very "professional" or "stylish" as other branded players, but it does the job.

With regards to Rockchip, it is never recommended to do anything to the firmware. Recovering dead Rockchip players is a greater pain in the ass than as compared to Actions chipsets. Due to the reason that it is not as common as Actions-based players, and also there are not many firmware-related tools for Rockchip.

I'm not very sure of the recording format for Rockchip players, but it varies from player to player. Some may record in .mp3, whilst others in .wav format.

I'll suggest that you check out the prices of flash-based players in Sim Lim Square, there are many small stands from what i last recall. If they are comparable to online prices, you're better off getting them from the shops. They sell similar players to what is sold online. At least you get to play around with the players and chose the one to your preference before you purchase. Besides, any issues with the player could be easily resolved with warranty at the store.

Why are clones called MP4 Players, when they don`t play .MP4 at all?
It`s like an MP3 Player which plays Music CDs only.

Hi lattesurf, thanks for your detailed reply! Smile

For Sim Lim Square, I had looked into the players sold there, but unfortunately, I do not like the designs they have imported, as they are currently still more focused on those with 2.0" LCDs and below (better profits I guess). Those with 2.4" LCDs are really ugly. Hehe. And even for these, they still cost significantly more (50% more than online prices), probably due to local support.

I will definitely take into your opinion of the difficulty of upgrading their firmwares and then decide if I want to continue to order.

Thanks!

Actually, Uxcell are pretty good with firmware support. Smile

They do provide firmware backups (in downloads) for their Omega, Temptation and Latino Rockchip players, which most other suppliers don't do.. Exclamation
