I don't really use my glacier anymore because of battery problems (and I don't have the audacity to ask UXCELL for yet ANOTHER replacement), but I'll try snipping off the rubber thing so I can get the USB cover off when I do use it.

If thats all it is, you can get a real Nokia battery real cheap on eBay (well under $10 shipped). It will last longer than the UXcell cheapo Nokia knockoff anyway.

btw michiganfrog, have you tried using a bl-5c nokia battery with your glacier? did it fit?

also one more question, how do you find the videos on Glacier and what resolution do you use normally or prefer to use on it?

No I did not try the BL-5C although I wanted to, and I still dont know what the story is on that! I asked someone here who did use a 5C with his Glacier(?), but he said he modded the case a bit, and I have no idea what he did, and he never responded when I asked. I think someone else may have tried a 5C, but I still dont know how they did it. I also asked UXCell if their 5C would work in their Glacier, they just reeferred me to their site, and never really answered my question. The thing with the 5C's is they tend to have a higher mah and may last longer, plus they're dirt cheap.

Videos on the Glacier are very nice, especially if your coming from a 1st gen Chipod. They're not perfect though, but I did not experience the ghosting effect from my 1st gen Chipods. During fast action scenes, it may not be 100% smooth, despite no ghosting effect. Its like a sharp transition from one action scene to another, that the eye can pick up on. Nothing bothersome, and AFAIC, I have seen tv shows and movies on it, they play pretty good. The thing I dont like is you have to lower the resolution, because the crappy AMV software doesnt fully support the Glacier. If you dont, you end up with the video either stopping after a few secs, or stuttering sound, and maybe choppy video. The effect this has is sometimes, some scenes will show blockiness, due to the low res. Despite this, The Family Guy, which looks absolutely awful on the 1st gen chipod due to low res blockiness, looks much better on the Glacier.

These are the resolutions I use:

AMV SETTINGS FOR GLACIER (AMV 4.09:

Full size movie: 208 x 176 (low) image quality: middle
Partial size but high quality movie: 208 x 160 image quality: high
Widescreen movie: 208 x 144: image quality: high

I wish i had found this forum BEFORE i ordered my glacier Smile but at this price .. hey .. trying out a new tech toy is always worth 40EU Smile Mine is supposed to ship after HK awakes from their new years party coma .. I have lots of questions and will post them in the (hopefully) appropriate threads or start new ones ..

Main question right now .. any mac users here using uxcell devices ? They claim to work with a mac .. but I am curious if the avm convert software is for mac too ?

Also .. what are you people actually watching on that thing ??? I was mainly thinking less action oriented stuff like 'The daily show" .. and maybe a disney movie for my kid when on the road ..

caipirina , the utilities for the players are mainly for Windows OS. So if you are running a Mac OS, you'll need some Windows emulator to run those programs.

lol UXCell is sick.

I sent them an email telling them that I would be shifting to NZ and i would be going there via Hong Kong, so if I could pick up the glacier mp4 direct from their factory outlet? they replied in one sentence saying that 'Please buy online' lol.

Maybe its a blessing in disguise. Now, I will buy the avi player because:
1. much better video capacity
2. glacier is having ever increasing problems being reported
3. of course i can easily get good after sales service in NZ as i will be living there
4. my dad agreed Very Happy

I'm not surprised at their response. Is it common for you to walk into factory outlets where you live and buy directly from the outlet? Because I can't do that here. They'll tell me to take a hike. Even if they have an eBay seller's account, they usually won't sell directly to the public. Or if they do, they charge a "pickup fee". Most factories I know of simply won't sell at all to the public directly, they are simply not equipped to do that. It requires a different billing system, and they may not be equipped to handle cash transactions like that. Not to mention staffing someone to take the time to handle walk-ins! Some online Chinese sellers in HK wont even ship to residents of their own country!

Probably because of scamming. Again, that's standard practice for Chinese companies, to put specific countries on their no-ship list, due to the amount of scammers (ie. with stolen credit cards) in these countries. Speaking as a Nigerian scambaiter, one of my other hobbies, I can't say as I blame them.

Had a rought start with my new Glacier... is it really 2GB?

My white 2GB Glacier came today, and of course, couldn't wait to check it out. I was very happy with it, as it blew away my old Nano clone in every way. Beautiful 2" screen, large enough to watch movies on, more depth of color (I think its 262k) and sharpness, and little to none of that bothersome "ghosting effect" the old CSTN screen.

ERGONOMICS:

The controls were easy to use, the battery cover not that bad (tight enough). It even had a speaker which wasn't bad, and which I found handy to test the unit without having to keep earbuds in. (The earbuds suck, though, but they look nice doing it). There is a problem with the rubber USB cover that I kept reading about... its damn hard to open, because the tab to grip it is made for people who have needles for fingers. I'm thinking that cutting the part inside the cover that goes into the usb plug might make the cover easier to open.

The menus are much nicer, the software is faster to navigate, and best of all, it remembers your place in text and movies, which the Nano clone wouldn't! And the lyric thing finally works on this unit, when it wouldn't on my Nano clone! (It comes with 2 WMA songs that have lyrics. Unfortunately, one of them is "Say You, Say Me" by Lionel Ritichie. And the other one's worse). It also plays WAV files, but only via a different menu option (VOICE - PLAY).

THAT CRAZY LITTLE RUBBER THING OVER THE USB PORT:

Note: Okay, here's the trick to that. Snip off the part inside the rubber cover that protrudes from the cover and plugs into the USB jack itself. Now when yo close the cover, not only does it stay closed and keep out dust & dirt, but it opens real easy. Scissors.... is there anything they -can't- do?

TRANSFERS:

Thing is, I needed to format it before giving UXCELL feedback, because I'd heard of people here receiving 2GB Glaciers that were 2gigabits. Well that didn't work so smoothly, and when it didn't come on after, I was sure I bricked my player! (I probably just had the slider switch set to OFF). Versions of MP3 Tools that were older than the 4.09 package wouldn't format the player AT ALL. The 4.09 version gave an error at about 13% into a LOW LEVEL format. After that, things got worse. The encryption method as described in the hacked player guide did not seem to be compatible with this player, although the slider in that tab did show about 1920MB. The windows format wouldn't work, but after numerous attempts, I finally got MP3 Tools (4.09) to do a high level format.

Then I copied 3 or 4 mp3's before it crashed.... About 21MB's worth. The player played the MP3's but rebooted at the end of the last. Now I was worried I had the world's worst hacked player, with 21MB flash! After more attempts at high level formatting, I managed to fill the player with about 1.89GB of audio / video files. The process took about 1.5hrs. Of course I wasn't sure if the files really transferred okay, so I went about playing the first couple of seconds of each track.... very tedious! I didn't test them all, but I figure that I fast forwarded through at least 1GB's worth of video and audio files.

FORMATTING:

As with my other MP4's, I find you have to high level format the player with the MP3 Player Utils first before attempting a low level format. Plus, the Glacier wouldn't low level format at all with the latest version of that software.

OVERALL CONCLUSIONS:

Let me say this: If this is REALLY 2GB, then this one of the best values on the MP4 player market now. Put in one of those 1700mAh BL-4C batteries from eBay that last 35 hours, and you're laughing at the iPod sheep-bots. The only thing I'm not sure of is how fragile it is, since its all plastic case, no metal (but for the buttons). And let me say this as well: the box clearly labels it as supporting MP3 and MP4 format, when it doesn't play MP4's!!

Hi There,

I ust bought a glacier, and was looking for one of the 1700mah batteries you were talking about. The biggest I could find was 1000mah in a bl4c. Where did you find yours? Can you tell me the seller?

Keith
